Community Fit Club

HHM Health is proud to announce that we are officially launching our Community Fit Club on June 30th! This new club is free and is the first of its kind at HHM Health. The Community Fit Club is a one hour health fair and social hour that will cover fun, healthy recipes and fitness tips. Our expert physicians at HHM Health created this program to help the Dallas community commit to a healthier lifestyle.

Each month, our physicians will share a new recipe as well as a new fitness tip. This month our recipe spotlight is almond crackers with hummus. This is a super healthy recipe and is a great on-the-go snack as well! Almond crackers are low in carbs, contain protein, and include healthy fat. Plus, they have amazing benefits as they ensure you receive necessary vitamins. There are so many snacks you can make just by using almond crackers, but, at HHM Health, our physicians highly recommend dipping the crackers in hummus. Hummus is not only delicious, but it is also nutritious. Hummus is high in fiber and protein. With such great benefits, it is no surprise that hummus helps people lose weight, so long as they follow other dietary measures. Almond crackers and hummus are also vegan, so it is a perfect healthy snack for everyone, regardless of dietary restrictions.

This month at HHM Health, our fitness highlight will discuss walking tips that help tone the backs of your arms. Walking is one of the best forms of exercise you can get. There is no equipment required and there are several safe spaces here in Dallas for residents to walk around and get their steps in. Usually walking tends to focus more on the muscles in your legs, but, with help from our expert physicians, you can learn how to target the backs of your arms as well, furthering weight loss.

The Community Fit Club begins Thursday, June 30, 2022 and lasts from 12 pm to 1 pm at 5750 Pineland Drive. If you are unable to make it, HHM Health will be live streaming the event on Facebook. We can’t wait to see you there and hope to continue hosting events like this!

At HHM Health, we strive to further the great city of Dallas through our work in the medical field.  Our expert physicians are able to handle any situation relating to the health of a patient, while also providing affordable health care to patients in need. We offer services that include family practice, women’s health, pediatrics, dental, vision, behavioral health, and even nutrition. If you need it, we provide it! HHM Health values compassion, advocacy, respect, excellence, and servant’s hearts, demonstrating how much we truly care. As the city of Dallas continues to grow, we hope to open more centers around the Dallas area to continue to serve the community and those living in it!

The Baby Formula Shortage, Explained

Senior citizens and babies are perceived as the most vulnerable members of society. Babies and their families are currently facing significant challenges with the baby formula shortage. In Dallas, Texas, and across the nation, parents are now left scrambling as formula products fly off the shelves. This is a frightening time, and we understand that.

At HHM Health, we hope that this blog offers insight, advice, and potential solutions and resources for parents of newborns and babies.

Why is there a shortage in the first place?

Abbott Nutrition’s Michigan plant paused production of baby formula after two infants’ deaths and a product recall. Only four companies produce approximately 87-90% of America’s baby formula, and Abbott Nutrition produced almost half of that vital percentage. The Michigan location is also the nation’s largest baby formula manufacturing plant.

There are other causes for the shortage as well, such as strict import regulations and the uncertainty of shipping dairy-based products overseas. Also, unfortunately, WIC only allows one manufacturer per state.

What about breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding is not an automatic fix, because breastfeeding is not a feasible option for everyone. Breastfeeding is a luxury in itself. Not every person can produce milk or enough milk. Others may not be able to breastfeed at all. Some babies require formula for health or dietary reasons.

Ultimately, the baby formula shortage should not be shrugged off as a minor issue. It severely impacts anyone with a baby.

So, what can I do about this?

There is a silver lining: Abbott and the FDA plan to safely reopen the Michigan plant in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, there are resources available for individuals and families alike.

What are the resources available for me and my family?

As you and your loved ones wait for the shortage to end, there are resources available. However, we always recommend that you call your baby’s provider for a consultation. Your provider will be able to point you in the right direction while navigating this uncertain time.

Other resources, besides your healthcare provider, include:

  • Calling your local food bank to see if baby formula is available
  • Calling your local WIC office for assistance (if your family is eligible)
  • Calling your pediatrician to see if in-office formula samples are available
  • Visiting smaller stores and drugstores to see if they have better stock
  • Shopping for baby formula online if possible

Vaccines Offered at HHM Health

At HHM Health, we are proud to offer and distribute vaccines to the people of Dallas County. Vaccines are effective when reducing the risk of infection and disease. Any vaccine is an achievement. During one’s lifetime, certain vaccines are required to participate in activities or to prevent harmful diseases. At HHM Health, we have an array of vaccines, but here are some of the most commonly distributed vaccinations:

Polio

Because polio plagued the world in the early 20th century, the vaccine was well received by the public. Determined to protect their children from the disability polio often left behind, the vaccine became widely accepted and is now considered one of the most common vaccines in the world.

Polio mainly affects children younger than 5. However, anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated is at risk of developing the disease. Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious virus that spreads through contact with someone carrying the infection. In some cases, polio leads to paralysis, which may be permanent depending on several factors.

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions recommends that children receive four doses of the polio vaccine beginning at two months old. Without a vaccine, children are not allowed to attend public school.

Polio has not been reported in the United States since 1979 and cases around the world decrease yearly.

MMR

The Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine protects against diseases that causes fever, brain damage, birth defects and more. Today, children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, which is proven to be highly effective against these diseases.

Measles is a contagious respiratory virus that has potential to cause hospitalization and spreads rapidly. Measles has been known to lead to pneumonia and the swelling of the brain and death in some cases.

Mumps is a contagious and infectious viral disease-causing swelling of the parotid salivary glands in the face, and a risk for sterility in adult males.

Rubella is a contagious viral disease, with symptoms like mild measles. It can cause feta malformation if contracted in early pregnancy.

The MMR vaccine became available to the public in 1963, which during the time was facing 3.5 million cases of measles annually. Because majority of the public in the U.S. got their MMR vaccine, there were only 1,282 cases of measles in the U.S.

Tdap

The Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine protects those diseases caused by bacteria and have potential to be dangerous.

Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, has the potential to be life threatening for babies. Until babies are old enough to get the vaccine, infants are relying on those around them to be vaccinated against whooping cough.

During each pregnancy, women need to receive the Tdap vaccine to help protect their child.

Before the Tdap vaccine was developed, about 9,000 died of whooping cough per year in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, deaths of whooping cough are now few and far between.

HPV

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a newer vaccine, becoming available in 2006.

HPV is the most transmitted sexual disease in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 43 million people were infected with HPV in 2018, many among people in their late teens and early 20s. This virus has many strains with some of them even linked to cancer. In fact, the HPV vaccine has led to a 29% decrease in cervical cancer, providing the closest thing to a cure for cancer. This vaccine is given in two to three doses to preteens and adults through 26 years old. By getting this vaccine at a young age, before sexual contact, the vaccine is more effective as it spreads throughout the body.

COVID-19

The COVID-19 vaccine is the most recent vaccine added into the medical field and has become the most received vaccine in recent months. Currently, how old you are and if you’re eligible for the vaccine depends on the brand. Most patients receive at least two doses of the vaccine. Scientists have found that the COVID-19 vaccine reduces the number of cases, and have strongly encouraged the public to take the vaccine.

At HHM Health, we are proud to offer these vaccines and more to the people of Dallas. If you need a vaccination, please contact our office to set up an appointment.

What to expect when getting glasses for the first time?

After years of blurry vision and killer headaches, you have finally decided to get your eyes checked for glasses. It’s important to make an appointment at a trusted optometrist. At HHM Health, we have trusted optometrists who are happy to examine patients and provide them the best care for a reasonable cost. After a few vision tests, your doctor will determine if you need corrective lenses.

This news may feel overwhelming as you may finally be able to see, you now wear a new accessory on your face. To make this transition from optional eyewear to required eyewear easier, our optometrist at HHM Health have come up with a few helpful insights to explain to patients what to expect when getting glasses for the first time.

“I can see!”

The point of wearing glasses is to correct your vision. However, the new view through your glasses may be startling when compared to what you are used to. Everything is clearer, from the street signs to the cars, everything has more detail than you’ve ever seen before.

“Ow, that hurts!”

When you begin to wear corrective eyewear, you may experience headaches or sore eyes during the adjustment period. This is primarily due to the stress on your eye muscles as they work to make sense of what you are seeing. Once your eyes begin to relax, the headaches and soreness will begin to disappear. Some people experience dizziness or light sensitivity as well, but this should only last for a few days. In addition to the pain caused by your prescription, the frames of the glasses may also be unforgettable to wear for a short period of time. This is due to the fact that your temples, nose and ears need time to get used to the new weight on your face.

Prepare for constant cleaning

No matter how hard you try to maintain clean lenses, dirt and grime seem to consistently gravitate towards clear glass. Water drops, fingerprints, oil from your hands, and makeup are the most common culprits. It is always a smart idea to have a soft, dust-resistant cloth on hand to keep glasses clear.

Where are they…?

In the past, you may have found it particularly funny when a friend or family member asked you if you had seen their glasses when they were in visible sight. Well, chances are this will happen to you as well. If you are someone who loses their wallet and keys regularly, be prepared to lose your glasses every now and then as well.

“The designs!”

When it comes to glasses frames, there are so many colors, designs, and features to choose from. There is no reason you cannot make your new glasses an iconic fashion statement. Whether you choose a bold, sophisticated or boho look, have fun with it.

Wearing glasses can be a new and exciting experience. To begin your journey into eyewear, call HHM Health today to book an appointment with one of our trusted optometrists. HHM Health provides accessible, affordable, and compassionate care. HHM Health is a Medical Home providing primary care services and beyond.

For both tests, the doctor or nurse will collect cells from the surface of the cervix. The Pap test checks for cancer or abnormal cells that may become cancer later, while the HPV test checks for the HPV infection, which is spread through sexual contact. Screenings have been proven to decrease the number of deaths from cervical cancer, which is why HHM Health promotes and offers these screenings to Dallas county through our Women’s Health Center.
